Fubara Dissolves Rivers Cabinet After Tinubu-Brokered Peace Meeting With Wike

Siminalayi Fubara, has dissolved the State Executive Council in a sweeping political move that follows high-level reconciliation talks involving President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The dissolution, announced Thursday in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onwuka Nzeshi, directs all Commissioners and Special Advisers to hand over to the Permanent Secretaries or the most senior officials in their respective ministries with immediate effect.

Governor Fubara expressed appreciation to the outgoing members of the Executive Council for their service and wished them well in their future endeavours.

The development comes barely 48 hours after a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where President Tinubu hosted key political actors from Rivers State in a renewed bid to resolve the protracted crisis rocking the oil-rich state.

The meeting, convened at the instance of the President, brought together Governor Fubara, his predecessor Wike, and other prominent Rivers stakeholders, amid escalating tensions and an ongoing impeachment process initiated by lawmakers loyal to the former governor.

Speaking on Tuesday after inspecting projects in Abuja, Wike confirmed the reconciliation effort, noting that it was the second time President Tinubu had intervened in the Rivers political standoff.

“I remember this is the second time the President is intervening and believe by the grace of God, this is going to be the last time,” Wike said.

He added that he had advised members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to “do the needful and obey Mr. President,” expressing confidence that the governor would also play his part in ensuring lasting peace.

The impeachment notice against Fubara, the third in recent months, remains a subject of litigation. It is unclear whether the pro-Wike lawmakers will withdraw the notice following the latest round of talks.

Observers say the governor’s dissolution of the cabinet may signal a significant political recalibration as efforts intensify to broker a truce and restore stability in the state.
